Palm Beach County's Natural Areas Will Remain Closed Until Further Notice

Based on Palm Beach County (PBC) Emergency Order No. 2020-003, effective immediately, all PBC Natural Areas are closed to the public until further notice.  This order will remain in effect until the expiration of Palm Beach County's Declaration of Emergency or until terminated or amended by further order.

PBC's Department of Environmental Resources Management will continue to monitor the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in our area and will communicate any changes in the status of our PBC Natural Areas as those changes are made.

Reducing fragmentation of preservation areas

This site will provide wildlife with a safe place to migrate between preservation lands.  By restoring a 6-mile tract along the L-8 Canal between 200 to 400 feet wide with pine flatwood and xeric hammock plant communities, wildlife will finally have a place to move safely back and forth between the 60,000 acre J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area and the 144,000 acre Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge as they had long ago prior to development and roads blocking their path.     

Features

  • Native wildlife observed on the site include:  Audubon's crested caracara, red-winged blackbird, great blue heron, cattle egret, common grackle, osprey, red-shouldered hawk, and queen and checkered white butterflies
  • Future plans include connection to the 26-mile Everglades Rim Trail.
  • Part of the Jeaga Wildways.
